What are fixed income bonds?

Fixed income bonds are debt instruments. You lend money to an issuer, who pays you set interest and returns your principal on the maturity date. Because the payments are fixed in advance, they’re called fixed income.

Are fixed income bonds safe for beginners?

They’re usually steadier than shares, but safety depends on the issuer. Go for a high rating and, where possible, asset backing. No bond is completely risk-free.

What are secured bonds?

Secured bonds are backed by specific assets of the issuer. If the issuer defaults, bondholders can claim those assets. That makes them safer than unsecured bonds, though you should still check the asset cover.

How do I choose the best bonds to buy?

Begin with your goal and time horizon. Then compare rating, security and yield to maturity across a few options. Pick the one that fits your needs at a risk level you can live with.

Can I lose money in fixed income bonds?

Yes. You can lose money if the issuer defaults, or if you sell before maturity after interest rates have risen. Holding a well-rated bond to maturity lowers both risks considerably.
